Moments from Books that Made You Go, "OH SNAP!"

I noticed that books often have moments that you have to reread a few times in order to really believe what you read was correct. This blog is dedicated to those moments. Anything surprising, witty, or seemingly impossible will be posted here.

“[Richard Musgrove] had, in fact, … been nothing better than a thick-headed, unfeeling, unprofitable Dick Musgrove, who had never done anything to entitle himself to more than the abbreviation of his name.”

“And the bodies will never be found; but no, one body, just one, will appear years later in a mass grave, the body of Angelica Garmendia, my adorable, my incomparable Angelica, but only hers, as if to prove that Carlos Wieder is a man and not a god.”

“So, you’re supposed to give us advice,” I say to Haymitch.

“Here’s some advice. Stay alive,” says Haymitch, and then bursts out laughing. I exchange a look with Peeta before I remember I’m having nothing more to do with him. I’m surprised to see the hardness in his eyes. He generally seems so mild.

“That’s very funny,” says Peeta. Suddenly he lashes out at the glass in Haymitch’s hand. It shatters on the floor, sending the bloodred liquid running towards the back of the train. “Only not to us.”

Shakespeare’s glasses slipped down to his nose and he looked over the top of the black frames. His smile was ugly. “And I doubt you have any idea what I can do to you.” The Bard leaned forward. “Anger me and I will teach you the true magic of words…and believe me, sirrah, when I am through with you, you will wish that Saint-Germain had burned down your precious forest.”

“Oh,” I say under my breath. “Tick Tock.” My eyes sweep around the full circle of the arena and I know she’s right. “Tick Tock, this is a clock.” -Katniss Everdeen, Catching Fire

Suddenly I am furious, that with my life on the line, they don’t even have the decency to pay attention to me. That I’m being upstaged by a dead pig. My heart starts to pound, I can feel my face burning. Without thinking, I pull an arrow from my quiver and send it straight at the Gamemakers’ table. I hear shouts of alarm as people stumble back. The arrow skewers the apple in the pig’s mouth and pins it to the wall behind it. Everyone stares at me in disbelief.“Thank you for your consideration,” I say. Then I give a slight bow and walk straight toward the exit without being dismissed.

Regarding Submission:

It was asked if you could submit quotes from an author about his or her book.

The answer is: Yes, you may. You can submit quotes about books, and about reading and writing if you’d like. This is, first and foremost, a literature blog. If you submit a quote, though, and I don’t believe that it fits the theme of the blog, then I will simply post it as a quote rather than a picture. Hopefully this is understandable.

Also, if you’d just like to discuss books in general, I would love to chat with you about them. Recommendations can also be given. I will compile a list each week of recommendations (if any), and post them at the end of the week for all to see and discuss.

If you have any questions, feel free to send them to me in a message. I’m looking forward to seeing what you have to say. :)

Happy reading!

-Carlyn
